For many, the words "power suit" conjure up images of Michael cheap prom dresses
Douglas on Wall Street: wide ties, suspenders, big watches and a sleek
attitude. While the style in these movies is cool right now, donning a
power suit is timeless. A power suit commands attention and exudes
confidence. The best part is, business suits don't have to be formal.
There are so many ways to pair a well-tailored power suit with the right
accessories to look sharp, sharp, and cool.
Power suits of the past had heavy shoulder pads and huge peak lapels.
For a modern powerhouse outfit, look for ones with traditional styling
and modern fits. A slim gray suit with narrow notch lapels and side
slits will complement any look. Trends like signature lapels,
double-breasted cuts and unique patterns or embroidery are just that:
trends. Stick to slim fit suits with classic details so you can get the
most out of your power suit.
If you work in a more relaxed, stylish office, you can wear brighter colors like cobalt blue or bolder patterns like checks and plaids. If your office dress code is more formal, stick to neutrals like gray, charcoal, navy or black.
Of course, make sure your suit fits you well. An ill-fitting suit that is too tight or too baggy doesn't exude authority.
Complement your suit with a solid dress shirt and silk tie
A plain white or blue dress shirt will pair well with your power suit. Solid color dress shirts not only look classic and fresh, but they can be worn with many different accessories and outfits. Since a suit jacket doesn't need to be worn all the time, it's important to make sure your dress shirts are freshly ironed and stain-free. With your coat off, you'll still look in charge.
Red tie is an unmistakable "power" color: it catches the eye and can
signify energy, strength and determination. However, a tie of any dark
color will also give a sense of power. Silk ties look vibrant and
classy. Try a dark blue tie with a light blue dress shirt and a gray
suit, a dark purple tie with a white shirt and a charcoal gray suit, or
an emerald green tie with a white shirt and a navy suit. Use a full
Windsor knot or a half Windsor knot, and make sure it is centered and
symmetrical.
Don't forget to add some sharp accessories and shoes to complete your
outfit. We suggest polished black Oxfords with a black belt. Match the
color of your dress socks to your suit pants. If your dress watch comes
with a leather strap, match the strap to your shoes and belt.
Then, choose a square scarf in a color that complements your tie or a simple pattern. For example, a solid maroon tie paired with a white square scarf with a contrasting maroon edge. You can also opt for a plain white pocket square for a crisp, clean look. Straight or pointed folds look the most powerful.
Finally, add cufflinks and a simple tie if necessary. Make sure any metals in your accessories match: If your cufflinks are silver, wear a silver tie and silver cufflinks. A shiny or metallic tie strip looks classic (think Mad Men) and should be smaller than the width of the tie. Place the tie clip between the third and fourth buttons of your shirt for both an eye-catcher and a way to secure your tie.

No matter how beautiful a suit looks on the rack, if it doesn't fit,
it won't look good on you. But what fits, and how do you know which suit
is best for you? We've put together a complete guide to show you how to
find a suit that fits and looks your best.
When trying on a suit, stand up straight and keep your arms relaxed at
your sides. Bring the dress shoes you're likely to wear with your suit
(or choose from our selection), so you'll have a complete picture of how
your outfit will look. Be sure to move around so you can get an idea of
??what it looks like when you're sitting, standing, talking, or eating.
Shoulder
Check that the shoulder pads in the jacket are at the edge of the
shoulders. A good way to test this is to lean against a wall while
wearing the jacket. Your shoulders and the shoulders of your jacket
should touch the wall at the same time. Will the jacket hit the wall
first? Shoulders are too broad. Does your arm hit the wall first? The
shoulders are too narrow and tight.
Whether the jacket has shoulder pads or not, the fabric should lie flat without any wrinkles or waves. The top seam should meet the sleeves of the suit, right where your arms meet your shoulders.
It doesn't matter if you're tall and slender, shorter than average, or athletic. Anyone of any shape can find a blazer that fits the shoulders well. Find the right one for the shoulder first, and then change other parts.
